MCGINTY Family History
This famous Irish clan surname, is recorded in many spellings including MacGinty, McGinty, MacEntee, McEntee, Genty, Ginidy, Ginty, Ginity, Ginnity, Ginnety, and others. It descends from the Gaelic Mac an tSaoi meaning the son of the scholar, early scholars of Ireland being known as the "saoi". Given that the clan were long famous for their territorial disputes with their neighbours, has lead some to suggest that the surname was a nickname, and an ironic one at that! What is certain is that for varied reasons not unconnected with song, the clan is well known world wide. The modern homeland is County Donegal, and in particular those parts which border on Counties Tyrone and Fermanagh, and without a prefix in County Mayo...Select Audience

John Sr. (or John I), ca.1720-1785. My 5th Great Grandpa. Came to America in 1742 from County Donegal with wife Rebeka Ragsdale (1722-1782), I am writing a book on my ancestry in America. "The McGintys. A historical Genealogy Journey and Autobiography." I would like any info on John Sr's ancestry in Ireland.

John McGinty, born 1700-1720 in Donegal, Ireland, died - 1782-84 in Mecklenburg Co, North Carolina USA. Came to US about 1742. Married Sarah Rebecca Richie or Ragsdale. Trying to find what ship he came over on and where he landed. His father may have also been a John McGinty born in Donegal, Irelandabout 1690. died possibly 1762 in Augusta, Virginia USA. Any information about these families would be appreciated.

John McGinty, my Great x4, is found in Donegal County in Pennsylvania in 1750, living in Mount Joy. His brother, Alexander McGinty, was a frontiersman and helped map the Kentucky River area. Probably they came to America about 1740? They died in Mecklenburg County, NC before 1800.

How can you reconcile Magfinachta (son of fair snow) with Mac an tSaoi? Both names allegedly represent McGinty.

Hi am trying to trace my ancestors from Co Donegal. I have got as far back to around 1870 +, to my great, great, grandad Daniel McGinty and his wife Bridget Delny, a farmer in Co Donegal. On of Daniels sons Neil or Neal McGinty emigrated to Scotland, he married a Julia Rodden, they settled in a small village of east calder in west lothian, scotland. I believe the family moved to Letterkenny. There are no records as they were destroyed in a fire during WW2. I would love to find my family if anyone can shed any light.

i have recently discovered other info when I done a DNA with ancersty.com. It would appear that my family actually originated in Scotland 1600/1700 before they moved to Co Donegal, which would give me a past Scottish clan. If anyone can assist I would be most grateful. Thank you

Hello,
My mother's maiden name is McGinty and we seem to be the last of us in this particular lineage. We are trying to establish if we have any distant relatives and to find out about our family history.
My mothers father was called Peter McGinty from Dublin near Broadstone. We know that most of his family prior to him were clergy men/woman however that is all we know.
A longshot but the saying goes you miss every shot you don't take.

Does this mean Michael and Mary were already in Australia?
